Port of Mombasa handles around 650,000 TEUs so far in 2023

The port of Mombasa in Kenya recorded 648,692 TEUs for the period January-May 2023 compared to 595,319 TEUs during the same period in 2022, an increase of 53,319 TEUs or 9%.

This performance means that the Port of Mombasa is on track to achieve annual container traffic of 1.48 million TEUs by the end of the year.

Moreover, during the previous three months, the average container stay time decreased from 4 days to 3.5 days. The average berth working time decreased from 2.6 days to 1.7 days, while the average gross movements per ship per hour climbed from 34 to 36.

In addition, the Port of Mombasa handled 146,739 TEUs in May 2023, setting a new monthly container traffic record. This is a 23.55% increase over the May 2022 performance of 118,765 TEUs.

Container traffic performance has been improving over the previous three months, with 132,119 TEUs and 138,373 TEUs recorded in March and April 2023, respectively. This compares positively with the results of 112,245 and 121,249 TEUs handled in the same time last year, 2022.
