Port of Mobile enjoys container volumes growth in January

Port of Mobile in Alabama, US has handled 47,768 TEU in January, which represents a 17.5% year-over-year increase with the reefer sector achieving a 21.5% jump compared to January last year.

At the same time, the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) volumes grew 167.9% handling 2,579 TEU.

“The Port continues its strong growth due to the terminals’ offering of capacity, service and supply chain reliability,” said Beth Branch, Chief Commercial Officer of the Alabama Port Authority.

The Port of Mobile’s performance is attracting permanent shifts in shipper supply chains under the pressure of national supply chain disruptions and announced investments in regional manufacturing, processing, and retail/distribution business lines, according to the port authority, which noted that the operations and added carriage capacity in the port’s Far East trade lanes are also attracting national railroad intermodal investments.

At Montgomery, the Alabama Port Authority and CSX Transportation Intermodal have announced a US$52 million intermodal container transfer facility, while last month, the State of Alabama announced the creation of the Alabama-USA Corridor, which is a US$231.6 million program with Norfolk Southern to upgrade economic development infrastructure in central and southern Alabama.
