Port of Melbourne sees lower box volumes in April

The total container traffic in the Port of Melbourne fell in the fourth month of the year. The Australian port’s total container throughput (full and empty) decreased by 5% compared to April 2021, reporting 255,193 TEU.

From the beginning of the year until now, the major port of the country has seen a reduction of 1.6%.

At the same time, total container imports fell by 4.2%, while total container exports decreased by 6.1% compared to the same month last year.

Additionally, total empty container movements were 3.9% lower on an annual basis, reaching a total of 68,830 TEU, with year-to-date volumes up 3.3%.

The situation is expected to move in the same context during May, as the container trade at the beginning of the month seems lower than the respective figures for the same period in 2021.
