Port of Melbourne container volumes down in May

Port of Melbourne’s total container throughput reached 254,310 TEUs in May, translating to a 6.3% decrease from the same month last year.

Additionally, container volumes have decreased by 1% for the period January – May compared with the same months in 2022.

Furthermore, full overseas imports were down 13.4% in May, with furniture, domestic appliances, clothes, paperboards and textiles, all falling short of last year’s levels. Full overseas exports were down 17.8%, with wheat, pulp & wastepaper, wool and scrap metal all dropping below last year’s levels.

Moreover, total empty container movements were 6.9% above May 2022 levels.
