Port of Melbourne and PTP partner to advance sustainable port operations

Port of Melbourne and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable and inclusive port operations. The signing took place during the Australia at ASEAN Business Mission Reception at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The MoU was exchanged between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 47th ASEAN Summit. “It’s good that we’ve had all of those MoUs witnessed here today that will lead to further development,” said Prime Minister Albanese.

The partnership focuses on three main areas:

  1. Maritime Emissions and Operations: Collaborate on research, share best practices, and improve efficiency to reduce emissions.

  2. Alternative Fuels: Develop and promote low-emission fuel solutions through shared infrastructure and aligned policies.

  3. Social Inclusiveness: Encourage diversity, equitable employment, and workforce training in the maritime sector.

Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon said, “This MoU reflects our vision of a future-focused port. We’re proud to partner with PTP to drive sustainability and decarbonisation.”

PTP CEO Mark Hardiman added, “As we celebrate PTP’s 25th anniversary, this partnership shows that true progress comes through collaboration and shared goals.”

The partnership began in 2023 under Australia’s Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) program, led by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. “By fostering technical dialogue and cooperation, Port of Melbourne and PTP are turning ambition into action,” said Simon Cramp, Strategic Director of P4I.

Cannon added, “This collaboration supports Australia’s global engagement and strengthens our shared commitment to sustainable growth and innovation.”

Both ports align their sustainability goals with global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Malaysia is one of Port of Melbourne’s top trading partners, ranking fourth in imports and fifth in exports by container volume.

PTP, the world’s fastest-growing port with 15.4% growth in early 2025, continues to strengthen Malaysia’s role in global trade. The MoU deepens economic and strategic ties between Malaysia and Australia.
