Port of Los Angeles sees box volume drop in January

In January, the Port of Los Angeles processed 726,014 TEUs, a 16% reduction from the previous January’s all-time high.

Loaded imports in January 2023 totalled 372,040 TEUs, a 13% decrease from the previous year, while loaded exports completed 102,723 TEUs, a 2.5% increase over the previous year. At the same time, empty boxes reached 251,251 TEUs, translating to a 26% fall year on year.

“We expect softer global trade throughout the first quarter, particularly compared to last year’s record-breaking start,” stated Gene Seroka, executive director of Port of Los Angeles.

Gene added, “Many factories in Asia have had extended Lunar New Year closures, retailers continue to discount products to clear warehouses and inflation-led economic concerns remain top of mind for Americans. With capacity on our docks today, we’re ready to unlock new levels of value and service at the Port of Los Angeles.”
