Port of Los Angeles reports busiest February in its history

The Port of Los Angeles marked its busiest February on record by handling 857,764 TEU, which translates to a year-on-year increase of 7.3%.

Loaded imports reached 424,073 TEU, representing a rise of 2.7% compared to 2021, while exports declined for the 36th time out of the last 40 months, totalling 95,441 TEU, a 5.7% decrease compared to the previous year’s February.

Regarding the empty containers, they climbed to 338,251 TEU, showing a growth of 18.6% over last year, which was mainly driven by the continued heavy demand in Asia.

“We’re taking advantage of the temporary lull in ship arrivals due to the Lunar New Year production slowdown in Asia to prepare for another wave of imports,” commented Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, who added, “We expect an increase in those vessel arrivals soon, as retailers begin to replenish their low inventories.”

During the first two months of 2022, the Californian port has reached 1,723,360 TEU, a 5.4% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.
