Port of Lázaro Cárdenas opens 2026 with cargo growth

The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas recorded a positive start to 2026, with January throughput reaching 2,383,826 tonnes, a 6% increase compared to the same month in 2025.

The result reflects operational efficiency, effective coordination across the logistics chain, and sustained confidence among port users.

Containerised cargo remained the dominant segment, accounting for 56 percent of total throughput, followed by mineral cargo at 25%.

The remaining 19% comprised general cargo, agricultural products, liquids and vehicles. Container volumes were particularly strong, with 234,962 TEU handled during January, representing a 22% increase year-on-year.

The breakdown of container traffic by trade type showed a relatively balanced distribution, with imports accounting for 25%, exports for 26%, and transshipment for 49%. The high transshipment share underlines the port’s growing role as a regional hub in international maritime trade.

In terms of inland transport, road haulage accounted for 73% of cargo movement while rail handled the remaining 27%, reflecting functional intermodal connectivity.

Vessel calls also increased during the month, with 150 ships attended, an 11% rise compared to January 2025.

Taken together, the January figures position Lázaro Cárdenas as a port gaining momentum across its principal business lines at the outset of the year.
