Port of Koper expands container yard capacity

The Port of Koper in Slovenia has started the extension of the container yard capacity on Pier No. 1, which is projected to be completed by the middle of the year.

The port in the Adriatic Sea has also started to use about half of the newly acquired stacking areas. When completed, the marine terminal is estimated to be able to accommodate 4,000 TEU more.

“The extension of the container terminal is the key infrastructure project of Luka Koper of the last decade,” stated a port official. The first phase of the project was completed in June 2021, with the construction of a 100-metre quayside.

The total investment amounts to US$51.5 million (€45.6 million) and part of the funding was obtained from the European North Adriatic Ports Association’s NAPA4CORE project.

It is estimated that the extension project will allow an annual throughput capacity of 1.5 million TEU, according to the Slovenian port.

In addition, Port of Koper has ordered two additional super post-panamax cranes, which should be delivered at the beginning of this summer, as well as three additional e-rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, expected in the next months, “to ensure high productivity levels.”
