Port of Koper commences container terminal expansion project with public procurement

Recently, the Port of Koper announced a major public procurement for one of its largest and most crucial upcoming projects.

The investment will include the construction of a container quay and additional storage space in the northern part of Pier 1. The deadline for tender submissions is 30 September 2024.

The public tender encompasses the development of a 326-meter quayside, 70,000m² of stacking and handling areas, dredging, and the installation of essential power infrastructure.

The quay will be a reinforced concrete structure, supported by deep steel piles driven up to 66 meters below the seabed to ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity and stability. Besides the construction challenges, the project requires maintaining smooth operations at all adjacent terminals and maritime activities throughout the construction period.

According to the schedule, construction is expected to begin early next year and be completed by the end of 2027.

This project is a key component of the Port of Koper’s strategic business plan for 2024–2028. Nevenka Kržan, President of the Management Board of Luka Koper, emphasized that initiating the public procurement process is a significant first step in this complex and demanding financial and organizational endeavour.

“By expanding the capacity of the container terminal, we are responding to the expectations of shipowners and logistics operators and strengthening our position among the North-Adriatic ports. The construction will follow the second railway track project, which is expected to be completed in 2026, so that the Port of Koper, as well as the entire Slovenian logistics sector, will benefit from the advantages of the upgraded port and rail infrastructure in the first years of operation,” explained Nevenka Kržan.
