Port of Hueneme launches second emissions-capture barge

Port Hueneme marked a major sustainability milestone this week with the introduction of a second emissions capture and control barge from STAX Engineering. The new barge, named STAX 6, highlighting the Port’s progress toward its ambitious goal of becoming the first zero-emissions port in the U.S. by 2030.

With just eight emissions capture barges operating across California, Hueneme now runs two, strategically positioned to serve both of its commercial terminals.

”We have always been a community-serving port. The port that farmers built. We take that responsibility very seriously,” stated Jess Ramirez, President, Oxnard Harbor District Board of Commissioners.

The STAX system uses patented mobile technology that connects directly to a ship’s exhaust stack without the need for vessel retrofitting. Once connected, the barge captures up to 99% of particulate matter (PM) and 95% of nitrogen oxides (NOx), filtering harmful pollutants before releasing cleaned air.

”We’re not just helping partners meet regulations. We’re building toward a zero-emissions future by integrating best-in-class carbon capture into the most comprehensive emissions control system on the market,” said Mike Walker, CEO, STAX Engineering.

”Commerce and sustainability can go together, and we’re proving it at the Port of Hueneme. Our collective efforts will protect the Port’s role as a vital economic engine and safeguard community health at the same time,” commented Kristin Decas, CEO, Port of Hueneme.
