Port of Helsinki sees decline in container volumes

The Port of Helsinki has reported a decrease of 7.4% year-on-year in container traffic during March, by moving a total of 44,788 TEU.

Total loaded containers at the Finnish port reached 33,788 TEU in March, representing a 6.3% drop compared with the same month of 2021, while total empty boxes handled at the port registered a reduction of 10.4% year-on-year, totalling 11,001 TEU.

The port commented on the figures, “Increased transportation costs due to the war, challenges in cargo traffic delivery chains and the effects of the war on general economic developments are presenting challenges to the operating environment.”

Total cargo traffic at the Port of Helsinki, however, was improved over March 2021 by 0.9%, with 1,316,873 tonnes, according to the port’s data.

Three months into 2022, the European port has handled 907,897 TEU, which translates to a decline of 10.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, during the January – March period, the total cargo traffic amounted to almost 3.65 million tonnes, which corresponds to a 4.8% increase over the corresponding period of 2021.

The Port of Helsinki believes that the sanctions imposed against Russia are necessary and calls for unified practices in the European Union (EU) in their execution. “The Port of Helsinki complies with EU and state-level decisions regarding Russia-related cargo flows and Russian-owned companies and ships,” noted the port in a statement.
