Port of Gioia Tauro inaugurates single border control post

The Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port Authority has formally handed over a newly constructed Single Border Inspection Post at the Port of Gioia Tauro to the Ministry of Health.

The handover was formalised through a loan for use agreement signed by Port Authority President Paolo Piacenza and Alessandro Raffaele, Director of the UVAC/PCF Campania, Calabria and Sicily Departments of the Ministry of Health.

The facility, built by the port authority at a cost of EUR€2.7 million, covers 4,000 square metres and is divided into three retractable warehouses comprising 34 prefabricated modules.

The allocation includes 22 modules for border control operations, six for phytosanitary services, three for Customs Agency offices and three for the Guardia di Finanza.

Located near the MCT Terminal’s operating area, the structure was built in compliance with current regulations and in close coordination with the relevant institutional authorities.

The new Border Control Post consolidates previously separate inspection structures, replacing the former PIF, DPE and access point facilities with a single integrated checkpoint covering multiple product categories and live animals.

The consolidation is designed to improve the speed and efficiency of inspections verifying compliance with European Union regulations on food, feed, health and animal welfare standards.

Port authorities highlighted the infrastructure’s relevance in the context of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which is expected to intensify international trade flows and increase the volume and variety of goods transiting through the port toward European markets.
