Barcelona International Terminal (BIT), a joint venture between SGS and Masiques, will build the most advanced coffee terminal in southern Europe at the Port of Barcelona. The project involves a €30 million investment, €20 million from the Barcelona Free Zone Consortium (CZFB) and €10 million from the Port of Barcelona.
The new terminal will occupy a 53,380 m² plot in section VI of Ronda del Port under a 50-year CZFB concession. It will feature two warehouses connected by a canopy, offices, truck loading/unloading areas, and a total built-up area of 27,477 m². The facilities will include solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, as well as constant temperature and humidity control to ensure optimal conditions for green coffee beans.
Construction is expected to take 36 months. The terminal will double current production capacity with fully automated modern equipment while maintaining BIT’s Customs Free Zone status.
Port of Barcelona president José Alberto Carbonell said the new terminal will help BIT retain its leadership in southern Europe and foster institutional cooperation. Pere Navarro, Spanish Government special delegate to CZFB, highlighted the project’s economic and employment benefits.
BIT currently handles around 80% of Spain’s green coffee imports, consolidating Barcelona as the main southern European gateway for coffee. The terminal expansion responds to the growth of agro-industrial company Elian and ensures long-term, sustainable logistics solutions for the coffee industry.
