Port of Barcelona invests over US$5.3 million to enhance operation processes and cybersecurity

PORTIC, the port community system (PCS) of the Port Community of Barcelona, has released a new technological platform that is expected to enhance both the capacity and speed of processing of operations and cybersecurity, aiming to optimise performance, security and resilience in case of future incidents.

The Port of Barcelona invested over US$5.3 million in the refurbishment of PORTIC’s technological infrastructure, which has been in use for more than ten years.

According to the Spanish port, the new technology platform will be implemented after the US$3.2 million renovation of all PORTIC visual applications, which began in 2020.

Furthermore, part of the Port of Barcelona’s goal is to provide this electronic document interchange system with the necessary tools to tackle new challenges, such as legislative changes, process improvements, and the inclusion of new technologies such as artificial intelligence.

This PORTIC upgrade also includes the restructuring of the software into microservices, the migration to a new highly secure TIER 3+ data centre, the installation of a backup data centre in case of a crash with a start-up time of fewer than two hours without data loss, advanced administration and monitoring services, and cybersecurity services.

“The Port of Barcelona’s PCS is critical for logistics operations, as it handles almost 40 million messages a year. The strong investment in the improvement of its ecosystem is essential to face the future challenges of the Port and its Port Community,” said Javier Gallardo, general director of PORTIC.
