Port of Barcelona improves financial results amid steady box volumes

Container volume remained at the same levels as in 2021 (-0.3%) and exceeded 3.5 million TEUs in 2022 at the Port of Barcelona.

In particular, the Spanish port saw an increase in import containers (+3.4%) and transit containers (+4.5%). On the other hand, the export container was down around 6%.

According to the port, that happened because of the slowdown in international maritime traffic.

China, the Port of Barcelona’s principal market, reduced its imports by 29.5%, while exports grew by 1%. Conversely, countries such as the United States or India increased their traffic by over 10%.

The Port of Barcelona, overall, passed the 70.9 million-tonne mark in total traffic during 2022, representing a growth of 6.9%. Also, dry bulk sector closed the year at 4.5 million tonnes, up 2% over 2021, while liquid bulk stood at 15.6 million tonnes, an increase of 26.9%.

In the meantime, the major box port in Spain closed the financial year 2022 with a turnover of around US$193 million, a year-on-year increase of 20% and 5% above the year before the pandemic.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) stood at US$111 million and the outturn was US$67 million, up 66% year on year, while the operating results reached US$58 million.
