The Port of Barcelona Management Board has approved a concession to Baleària for the construction and operation of a new passenger and ro-ro cargo terminal on Adossat wharf, following a request submitted by the shipping company in December 2024.
With no competing applications received during the public information process, the concession was granted to Baleària, which has operated regularly at the Port of Barcelona since 2003.
The terminal project carries a construction budget of EUR€25.3 million and will occupy a total area of 75,250 square metres.
The facility will include a trapezoidal terminal building of 5,600 square metres housing passenger facilities, offices and services, along with truck and car waiting areas, semi-trailer storage, traffic lanes, vehicle parking, taxi and bus stops and public rest areas.
Passenger boarding walkways, gates and onshore power supply systems connecting berthed vessels to the electricity grid are also incorporated into the design, alongside a photovoltaic electricity generation system.
The terminal will come on stream in February 2027 in an initial operational area of 38,000 square metres, expanding to its full concession area by the end of 2029.
At full configuration, the facility will accommodate four simultaneous ro-ro vessel berths.
The concession is granted for a period of 27 years with the possibility of extension.
Port of Barcelona President José Alberto Carbonell described the concession as evidence of the port’s confidence in projects that deliver value to maritime mobility and national connectivity.
Baleària President Adolfo Utor highlighted the strategic benefit of consolidating all of the company’s Barcelona operations into a single facility, improving efficiency, service quality and logistics processes while advancing the company’s commitment to more sustainable maritime operations.
