Port of Amsterdam introduces mixed mooring policy

The Port of Amsterdam has taken a significant step toward by permitting mixed mooring at designated berths.

The Port of Amsterdam has taken a significant step toward a more flexible inland shipping infrastructure by permitting mixed mooring at designated berths from December 1, 2025.

The measure allows vessels carrying different categories of dangerous goods, as well as vessels without hazardous cargo, to moor alongside each other under specific conditions, enabling more efficient use of existing berth capacity.

The policy change follows extensive risk analyses conducted by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Rijkswaterstaat, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, and the relevant port authorities.

Their combined assessment concluded that advances in vessel safety standards across the modern inland fleet make mixed mooring operationally viable without compromising safety requirements.

The Port of Amsterdam has designated Usselincxhaven Wachtsteiger East and West as the initial locations where mixed mooring is permitted.

The measure directly increases available capacity within the port area, improves traffic flow and enhances utilisation of existing infrastructure, delivering tangible benefits for inland shipping operators navigating an increasingly constrained berth environment.
