The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has unveiled a new electric truck charging station at Port Newark. This is a significant move toward reducing emissions in drayage operations and supporting the region’s broader clean energy goals.
Located at the truck welcome center, the station includes four high-powered, 350-kilowatt DC fast chargers. The idea is to offer truck drivers a convenient “top-off” opportunity before heading back to their main charging location.
The new chargers will be available from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. due to ongoing construction along the Port Street Corridor. Also, full 24/7 access is expected by late 2025. Charging will be priced at US$0.45 per kilowatt-hour, plus tax, with a potential US$1 per minute idling fee if demand rises.
The station supports most major commercial electric truck models. Additionally, offers an additional 20–40 miles of range with just a 10–15 minute charge.
“These chargers are an important piece of that puzzle as we usher in a more sustainable future for the thousands of trucks serving the East Coast’s busiest port every day”, said Kevin O’Toole, Port Authority Chairman.
“Our promise to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 reaches beyond the Port Authority itself to our operational partners,” commented Rick Cotton, Port Authority Executive Director.
