Port Houston secures $131 Million for ship channel construction and maintenance

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority held its regular monthly meeting.

During this, the US Army Corps of Engineers released its FY2025 work plan, allocating $33 million toward the Houston Ship Channel Expansion (Project 11) construction, and an additional $98 million for ongoing operations and maintenance to ensure continued dredging of the channel.

Also, it was announced that the USACE has officially approved the federal Assumption of Maintenance for Segment 1B of the Houston Ship Channel (Redfish Reef to Bayport Terminal).

This follows the prior approval of Segment 1C (Bayport to Barbours Cut Ship Channel) in 2022.

These approvals mark the successful conclusion of nearly five years of collaborative effort, and are projected to yield net present value savings of nearly $380 million over the next 50 years for Port Houston.

The Port remains on schedule to complete dredging activities for Segment 1C by late Q2 or early Q3 2025, finalizing Port Houston’s direct contributions to the Project 11 dredging phase.

Meanwhile, completion of the Galveston Bay beneficial use features is planned for Q4 2025.
