Pilbara Ports delivers record throughput for sixth consecutive Year

Pilbara Ports has achieved a major milestone, recording a total throughput of 775.7 million tonnes in the 2024–25 financial year, marking the sixth consecutive year of record-breaking volumes across its operations.

This achievement spans the ports of Ashburton, Dampier, Port Hedland, and Varanus Island, and represents an estimated $153 billion in commodities moved, underscoring Pilbara Ports’ vital role in Australia’s economy and its strategic position in the global supply chain.



The Port of Port Hedland was once again a standout contributor, handling 577.7 million tonnes a 1% increase from the previous year reinforcing its status as one of the nation’s most significant export hubs.

Despite persistent global economic headwinds, iron ore exports remained strong, rising by 3% to 730.8 million tonnes.

Pilbara Ports now handles approximately 81% of Australia’s iron ore trade and an estimated 43% of global iron ore exports, highlighting its critical role in the international commodities market.

Additional operational highlights for 2024–25 include: Salt exports totaling 5.3 million tonnes from Port Hedland and Dampier, making up 26% of Australia’s total salt exports,  8,480 safe vessel visits, averaging 23 vessel movements per day across all ports.

Progress also continued on several strategic infrastructure projects, supported by both the Commonwealth and Western Australian Governments.

Key developments include: Advancements on the Lumsden Point development at Port Hedland, ongoing work on the Dampier Cargo Wharf Projects, aimed at enhancing long-term port capacity and capability and completion of the Spoilbank Marina in Port Hedland, delivered on behalf of the State Government to provide safer access for recreational boating and serve as a vibrant community hub.

Commenting on the milestone, a spokesperson for the Cook Government stated that despite a challenging global economic environment, the Pilbara Ports team has once again delivered record results, reinforcing its position as one of Australia’s most valuable port operators.
