PIL and MatchBox Exchange partner to improve container flow in Thailand

Pacific International Lines (PIL), a prominent shipping company headquartered in Singapore, has joined forces with MatchBox Exchange, a SaaS platform facilitating the reuse and exchange of shipping containers among operators, to enhance landside logistics for PIL’s clientele in Thailand.

This partnership, an extension of a similar venture in Malaysia initiated in 2023, grants PIL’s Thai customers access to the MatchBox Exchange platform for seamless triangulation of import containers for export, featuring instant 24/7 approval.

“With MatchBox Exchange’s innovative solution, we can help our customers minimise their environmental footprint while meeting PIL’s objectives of driving a sustainable future as an efficient and future-ready shipping line,” stated Lim Chee Wei, general manager, Logistics Division, PIL

Furthermore, triangulation entails repurposing import containers for exports, curtailing the need to transport empty containers to and from depots. This collaboration empowers PIL’s customers to enhance turnaround times, diminish trucking distances and carbon emissions, and circumvent unnecessary depot visits.

Established in 2017, MatchBox Exchange has forged partnerships with 20 shipping lines. It serves over 1,500 users across Asia, facilitating the convenient reuse, request, or offer of empty containers for import or export endeavours.

Since its inception in Thailand in 2020, MatchBox Exchange has witnessed notable growth, with a nearly 49% surge in triangulation bookings from 2022 to 2023. PIL ranks among the premier container shipping lines globally and is the largest carrier native to Southeast Asia, focusing on regions including Asia, China, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Oceania, and the Pacific Islands.

By harnessing the services provided by MatchBox Exchange, PIL reaffirms its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, offering enhanced and environmentally sustainable solutions to its clientele.

“With PIL on our platform, we can offer wider container choices and enhanced triangulation opportunities for our users in Thailand. Our growing number of Thai users reflects the platform’s value in saving time and money through depot decongestion and allowing users to optimise their fleet,” commented Winnell Wongpanich, MatchBox Exchange Country manager – Thailand.

In 2023, WiseTech Global, the developer and provider of CargoWise, the world’s leading logistics execution software, acquired MatchBox Exchange. Registration on MatchBox Exchange is complimentary, with a small fee applied for each re-use or exchange booking facilitated on the platform.
