Peel Ports Group has launched a major digital transformation programme across its dry bulk terminals, backed by a £4 million investment and powered by CommTrac from TBA.
The initiative is already gaining industry recognition and is redefining how bulk cargo is managed at some of the UK’s busiest ports.
A new standard for bulk operations
The programme is being rolled out across key sites including:
-
Port of Liverpool
-
Port of Birkenhead
-
Runcorn Docks
-
King George V Dock, Glasgow
Together, these terminals handle millions of tonnes of dry bulk cargo each year.
The project is one of the most comprehensive operational transformation initiatives ever undertaken by Peel Ports Group. It will:
-
Halve stock losses across bulk terminals
-
Cut revenue leakage by up to 3%
-
Improve accuracy, resilience and customer service
Fully connected digital operations
At the heart of the programme is CommTrac, TBA’s terminal operating system. It connects weighbridges, ANPR gate systems, driver self-service kiosks and handheld devices into one fully integrated platform.
From vessel discharge to customer dispatch, every cargo movement is now digitised and tracked in real time.
Drivers:
-
Check in using ANPR
-
Confirm dispatches via self-service kiosks
-
Record loads using mobile devices
This eliminates manual data entry and significantly reduces errors.
Infrastructure, data and workforce flexibility
The digital transformation is supported by a wider infrastructure upgrade. This ensures the network is ready for predictive planning tools and smart service delivery.
Standardised systems and processes across sites also mean employees can move seamlessly between terminals. This improves flexibility, resilience and service continuity across the group.
Industry recognition
The programme has already been named winner of the Innovative Technology Award at the International Bulk Journal (IBJ) Awards, recognising its ambition and impact.
Executive comments
Gavin Laybourne, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Peel Ports Group, said:

Chris Hicks, Managing Director of TBA Doncaster, added:
“Partnering with Peel Ports Group on this journey has been a privilege. Together, we are delivering cutting-edge technology and building a smarter, more connected, future-ready port network. This is innovation with purpose.”
Real-time mobile operations
The transformation is also supported by the CommTrac mobile app, which provides:
-
Real-time operational data
-
Faster load recording
-
Improved situational awareness
By putting live information directly in the hands of frontline teams, the app increases speed, accuracy and efficiency in fast-moving terminal environments.
