PD Ports launches new jumbo rail service

PD Ports has launched its first jumbo rail service linking Teesport with Mossend and Grangemouth, strengthening connections between Scotland and global markets.

The new 16-wagon service, developed in partnership with Network Rail and DB Cargo, increases weekly capacity by 40 additional slots and replaces the previously separate routes to Mossend and Grangemouth.

Designed to support Scottish distilleries, retailers, manufacturers, and chemical producers, the upgraded service offers daily departures, enabling businesses to move cargo more efficiently while reducing dependence on road transport.

Key benefits include:

  • Daily flexibility: More frequent trains allow smoother shipment scheduling.

  • Sustainability: Reduced road congestion and lower carbon emissions.

  • Global connectivity: Timed with Teesport’s vessel arrivals for faster import and export handling.

Jo Edmenson, Business Development Manager at PD Ports, commented:

“We’ve listened to our customers, and this service is designed around their needs – reliable, sustainable, and flexible enough to handle volumes daily. It’s about making the journey from A to B as efficient as possible.”

The new jumbo train represents a significant step in PD Ports’ long-term rail strategy, enhancing supply chain resilience and sustainability for Scottish industries.
