Patras opens maritime gateway to Egypt

The Port of Patras is set to play a new strategic role in East Mediterranean–Europe trade flows following the signing of a Letter of Intent to establish a direct maritime connection between Patras and ports in Egypt.

The agreement was announced by the Port Authority of Patras S.A., marking an important step in strengthening commercial and transport relations between Greece and Egypt.

It reflects the shared intention of both sides to develop a new, secure and dynamic maritime trade corridor linking the two countries.

As part of the initiative, Egyptian shipping company Pan Marine Shipping has expressed its intention to begin discussions on launching both cargo and passenger ferry services between Patras and Egypt.

The development is considered a strategic milestone for the Port of Patras, as it places the port at the heart of East Mediterranean–Europe cargo flows, reinforces its role as an international intermodal transport hub.

Furthermore, it creates new opportunities for logistics chains, exports and the Greek economy, and significantly enhances the geoeconomic position of Western Greece.

According to the Port Authority, the agreement confirms its long-term outward-looking strategy.

In recent years, the authority has pursued a structured plan of international partnerships, expanding the port’s reach beyond traditional European corridors and building new connections with high-growth markets.

The planned Greece–Egypt maritime link via Patras is described as a geostrategic investment in the future of maritime transport, expected to generate multiple benefits for trade, employment in Patras and the wider Western Greece region, and Greece’s international standing.

Commenting on the development, Panagiotis G. Anastasopoulos, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Port Authority of Patras, said:

“With the signing of this agreement, Greece substantially strengthens its role as a key cargo transport hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. At the same time, it revives a maritime relationship spanning thousands of years between Patras and Egypt, adapted to the needs of today. The Port of Patras is being upgraded and now assumes a central role as a modern transport hub, delivering benefits for trade, the economy and the wider region.”

The Port Authority of Patras said it will continue to work with consistency and vision, underlining its ambition for the port to assume a leading role on the broader Mediterranean maritime map.
