Panstar Line to operate South Korea’s first NSR trial voyage

Panstar Line has been chosen to operate South Korea’s trial sailing of the Arctic Northern Sea Route (NSR), following a competitive selection process in which it was the sole bidder. The China-South Korea-Japan regional ferry and small-scale container carrier will conduct the country’s first government-backed NSR voyage later this year.

Background

South Korea announced its intention to trial the NSR at the start of 2026 as part of its broader interest in Arctic shipping routes. The route offers a significantly shorter sailing distance between Asia and Europe compared to traditional passages via the Suez Canal.

A full roundtrip voyage

Unlike many NSR transits, which have been one-way, Panstar’s trial will cover a full roundtrip. The westbound leg will include port calls at Tromsø in Norway and Rotterdam before the vessel returns to South Korea via the NSR.

Financial backing and vessel acquisition

The Korea Shipping Association will provide financial backing for the trial. The Korea Ocean Business Corporation will finance the acquisition of a suitable ice-classed vessel on preferential terms. South Korean port fees for the voyage will also be set below standard rates to support the trial’s viability.

The sailing represents a significant step in South Korea’s ambitions to develop Arctic route capabilities and assess the commercial potential of the NSR for its shipping industry.
