Panama Canal and FIU sign cooperation agreement

The Panama Canal and Florida International University (FIU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen cooperation in trade, logistics, sustainability, water management, and public policy.

A delegation from FIU toured the Miraflores Locks to see Canal operations firsthand.

The signing ceremony took place at the Panama Canal Administration Building. Minister for Canal Affairs Jose Ramón Icaza Clement attended as guest of honor. Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales and FIU President Jeanette M. Núñez also joined the event.

Panama Canal representative Jana Allen stressed the value of academic partnerships and a shared focus on education, innovation, and public service.

Administrator Vásquez said education and research are essential for sustainable development and noted that the agreement strengthens the Canal’s commitment to global academic collaboration.

President Núñez highlighted the importance of partnerships that support research, innovation, and student development to benefit the region.

The MOU creates a framework for research projects, academic exchange, and training programs. It also supports talent development and knowledge-sharing in strategic fields.

Through this partnership, the Panama Canal reinforces its mission to promote innovation and education as drivers of sustainable growth in Panama and worldwide.
