ONE updates Europe Environment Surcharge

Ocean Network Express (ONE) has released its latest update on the Europe Environment Surcharge (EES), which will be adjusted from 1 January 2026 as the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) enters its full compliance phase. The surcharge was originally introduced in January 2025 to align ONE’s operations with strengthening environmental regulations.

From 2026 onward, carriers will be required to surrender 100% of verified emissions, an increase from the current 70% requirement. The broader scope of the EU ETS will also include methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), further expanding emissions accounting obligations for shipping lines operating to, from, or within Europe. ONE reaffirmed its support for these regulatory developments and emphasized its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its network.

The company has published the EES tariff applicable from 1 January to 31 March 2026, noting that EES levels are reviewed quarterly and may change with prior notice. The surcharge applies to all contracts; however, ONE clarified that export cargo from China will not be subject to an EES surcharge, as the cost component will instead be incorporated directly into freight rates.

Effective Date:
Non-FMC regulated trades  January 1, 2026
FMC regulated trades*, Canada January 1, 2026
(*United States, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, Hawaii)

The updated EES tariff chart for the upcoming quarter is available to customers, and ONE encouraged shippers with questions to contact their local representatives. The carrier thanked its customers for their continued support and reiterated its commitment to serving global transportation needs while meeting evolving environmental requirements.
