ONE Apus cargo discharge continues

A total of 212 cargo containers have been discharged from the ONE Apus after the vessel ran into a Pacific storm in late November, with the loss of an estimated 1,800 containers.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]Discharge operations at Kobe Port ceased over the New Year period and resumed on 5 January, the carrier said that cargo owners will be contacted individually for arrangements on their cargo as information becomes available.

The ONE Apus was the second vessel on the FP2 service to suffer a stack collapse within a month. However, the cargo losses on the ONE Aquila on 4 November were minor by comparison to the ONE Apus accident.

Container shipping experts have warned that larger ships are inherently stable, due to their wider hull shapes, this means they will return to upright in heavy seas rapidly, causing heavy forces to be applied to the cargo lashing equipment.[/s2If]
