Oceanbird appoints Amrit Kaur Bhullar as new CEO

Leadership Change in 2026
Oceanbird has appointed Amrit Kaur Bhullar as CEO, starting January 1, 2026. She will guide the company as it moves from research into full commercialisation.

Bhullar grew up in London and has lived in Norway for 15 years. She is currently Senior Vice President of Business Development & Group Innovation at VARD. She has also held senior roles with suppliers to the shipping industry.

Wing Sail Milestone
On August 25, Oceanbird unveiled its first land-based wing sail at the new test site in Landskrona. The 40-meter sail will be installed on the Wallenius car carrier Tirranna in early 2026.

Focus on Growth
“As Oceanbird enters the commercial phase, we must deliver an effective prototype while scaling up to meet demand,” said Bhullar. She stressed the need for a step-by-step plan, building on the company’s strong technical base while adding a sharper commercial focus.

Partnerships Remain Key
Bhullar also underlined the role of partnerships. “Wind propulsion can fit many ship designs and combine with other zero-emission solutions,” she said. She aims to expand Oceanbird’s portfolio, lower costs, and strengthen aftermarket support.

Support From Owners
Oceanbird is jointly owned by Alfa Laval and Wallenius. Both welcomed the appointment. Erik Nøklebye, CEO of Wallenius Lines, said her leadership matches Oceanbird’s vision. Alfa Laval’s Marine Division president Sameer Kalra added: “With Amrit at the helm, Oceanbird will deliver on its decarbonisation potential.”
