ÖBB Rail Cargo Group to offer new connection to Trieste

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) will expand its network for conventional wagonloads with a new weekly transfer connection between the Austrian town of Villach and Trieste in Italy.

This non-stop connection which is being operated in its own traction for the first time is particularly suitable for the transport of wood, steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals, according to a statement, and the departure times can be agreed individually.

“The new transfer connection not only offers a transit time of one day but also stands out for its international antenna connections,” said the rail logistics company.

Starting in Villach South Terminal, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group’s network offers routes to economic centres in Central, Northern and Eastern Europe, while Trieste is a major transport hub for intercontinental trade between the Mediterranean and China.

Moreover, the multifunctional terminal Trieste Servola (Piattaforma Logistica di Trieste) is made up of the established terminal section for wagonloads at the railway station Scalo Legnami with a shipping pier and a newly built area for containers and RoRo units.

Additionally, in the coming years, the Terminal Service Austria (TSA) location Villach South which is the terminal service provider of ÖBB Infrastruktur at Logistik Center Austria Süd will be expanded to become a dry port.

Therefore, at the junction of the Baltic-Adriatic railway axis and the Tauern axis, there are opportunities to establish a first-class logistics centre, which will provide even better connections between the ports of Trieste, Ravenna, Koper, Rijeka and Fürnitz, according to a statement.

Customers can also benefit from the “end-to-end connection from the first mile to the last,” with this transport solution to and from Italy, which also constitutes an efficient trade and forwarding option for the Eurasian continent.

ÖBB RCG contributes by 28.2% to the total volume of goods transported in Austria, with its trains running on electricity, generated entirely from renewable energy sources.
