ÖBB Rail Cargo Group strengthens Austria – Scandinavia network

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has upgraded its TransFER network for wagonloads between Austria and Scandinavia, while freight is now transported from the Austrian town of Linz to Malmö in Sweden via the German hub Rheinkamp near Duisburg, and the return trip goes to Wels.

The TransFER Linz–Scandinavia–Wels for wagonloads now shares the route with the TransFER Linz–Duisburg–Wels, according to the railway company.

In the course of the operational consolidation of the connections, the weekly round trips between Linz and Rheinkamp (near Duisburg) and to Wels were increased from five to six – two of which continue from Rheinkamp by rail via Maschen to Denmark and the Öresund Bridge to Malmö.

Transports to and from the Vienna central marshalling yard are still possible with TransFER combinations, according to RCG’s statement.

“We can include containers in the train as well, but this depends on the final destination in Sweden and has to be checked in advance,” told Container News a company’s spokeswoman, who noted that the new train product from and to Sweden is mainly for conventional wagons.

The TransFER Linz–Scandinavia–Wels network is projected to create a transport solution in the Scandinavian area with further connection options in Northern and Western Europe.

“The updated route will also eliminate the need to reload onto ships to reach the port region of southern Sweden,” explained RCG in a statement.
