Oakland reports increased imports in May, sees uncertain outlook in second half

Despite ongoing problems in the global supply chain, Port of Oakland saw its imports rise in May by 6.7%, compared to the same month in 2021. However, the total cargo volumes of the American port in May slightly decreased by 1% compared to May 2021.

A port official said the Oakland port received the equivalent of 98,789 TEU in May, a number it is satisfied with, as there are major challenges at other ports delaying the arrival of cargo in Oakland.

The issues include lockdowns and congestion at upstream ports and ships arriving off-schedule due to delays in the supply chain elsewhere.

“The boost of import cargo volume in May is an encouraging sign for our seaport,” said Port of Oakland director maritime, Bryan Brandes.

Oakland port reported the restoration of some ship services in May that had previously been suspended to boost shipping lines’ schedules. The US port had 71 ship calls, two more than April.

According to the port, increased vessel services will help exporters facing capacity constraints on vessels. Oakland reported a 0.5% increase in May exports year-on-year.

It should be noted that the port sees the overall volume outlook as uncertain in the second half of 2022. Import demand is questioned due to building inventories in the US and inflation concerns, according to the port’s statement.
