NYK JV trials electronic vehicle truck transportation in China

NYK Zhenhua Logistics (Tianjin) Co. Ltd. (NYK Zhenhua), an NYK joint venture (JV), will launch a demonstration test to examine potential issues involving a large EV (electronic vehicle) truck in July.

This test will be performed jointly with Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (China) Ltd. (MSIC) and Panasonic Navinfo Mobility Technology Service (Beijing) Co. Ltd. (Panasonic Navinfo).

EVs have become more common worldwide amid decarbonisation efforts in the industry, while safety and economic risks caused by battery abnormalities and deterioration have become issues that need to be resolved. Especially in China, the world’s largest EV market, this matter has become a concern for companies such as logistics providers, which are increasingly using more of these vehicles, according to NYK statement.

The three companies are going to conduct a demonstration test from July 2023 to January 2024. At the same time, NYK Zhenhua aims to introduce a large EV truck to transport auto parts between factories in Tianjin, China.

The company will then utilise BetteRRRy, a battery-analysis cloud service provided by Panasonic Navinfo, to verify the environmental contribution, economic efficiency, and safety of the EV truck.

At the same time, NYK Zhenhua will provide the EV truck’s battery-status data to MSIC through BetteRRRy.

Through this demonstration test, NYK Zhenhua will verify the effectiveness of an EV truck and proceed to further consider their introduction in the country, whilst examining the possibility of adopting solutions and insurance products for addressing battery issues.

In the future, the NYK Group aims to utilise know-how gained through this demonstration test in areas other than China, and will further promote decarbonisation in the auto parts transportation business.

Roles and Objectives of Each Company

Company Summary
NYK Zhenhua
  • Test a large EV truck in real transportation operations to validate environmental contribution, economic efficiency, and safety, with the aim to promote decarbonization in the land transportation business for auto parts
  • Equip the large EV truck with Panasonic’s battery analysis cloud service, BetteRRRy, allowing for battery-status visualization and abnormality detection
  • Share battery status data with MSIC following analysis by BetteRRRy
Panasonic Navinfo
  • Provide BetteRRRy, a battery-analysis cloud service, to promote the usage of EVs in the logistics industry
  • Increase EV operational safety through abnormal-battery detection, future forecasts of battery status, and alerts
  • Improve operation’s economic efficiency through consulting based on visualization of the status of battery degradation
MSIC
  • Verify the development and provision of the following two new insurance products:
  1. Battery Backup Service Liability Insurance

Provides compensation for costs incurred due to actions taken when anomalies such as battery ignition are detected (e.g., costs for towing, inspection, and repair)

  1. Warranty Insurance for Battery Repair/Replacement (under development, official name yet to be decided)

Covers the cost of repair or replacement when batteries experience abnormal deterioration beyond the manufacturer’s warranty
