NWSA sees strong container growth in April while welcoming new eco-friendly vessel

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) continued its momentum in April 2025, driven by importers advancing shipments amid ongoing market uncertainty.

Full international imports rose by 8.8% year-over-year, marking the 14th consecutive month of month-over-month growth. Full international exports, however, declined slightly by 1.7%.

Total container volume, combining international and domestic traffic, reached 277,828 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in April, a 7.4% increase compared to April 2024.

Year-to-date (YTD) volumes are up 15.9%, led by a 21.7% rise in full imports, while full exports dipped marginally by 0.5%.

As part of April’s highlights, NWSA and Ocean Network Express (ONE) welcomed the Phoebe, a newly delivered 6,014 TEU container vessel operated by ONE.

Representatives from Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. joined port officials for the occasion.

Phoebe made her maiden call at Washington United Terminals in Tacoma’s South Harbor. The vessel operates within the Premier Alliance’s PN1 service, offering direct links to China, Taiwan, and Japan, with an industry-leading 11-day transit from Tokyo.

Notably, the ship features a dual-fuel propulsion system capable of transitioning to ammonia or methanol, aligning with industry sustainability goals.
