Northport breaks annual container record surpassing 3.3 million TEUs

Malaysia’s Northport, a member of MMC Group, has achieved new annual throughput records in both its container and conventional cargo business segments.

As of 27 November 2024, Northport handled a total of 3,328,508 TEUs, surpassing its previous annual record of 3,324,364 TEUs set in 2021.

A day later, on 28 November 2024, the port also broke its conventional cargo record, handling 11,434,814 FWTs (Freight Weight Tonnes).

“With an increase in ad-hoc calls and the introduction of new services calling at Northport, we are proud to have achieved extraordinary milestones in both container and conventional cargo throughput with record-breaking performance in 2024, with one month still to go,” said Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, former CEO of Northport, who has assumed a new position within MMC Group as CEO of MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd (MMC Ports), effective 1 December 2024.

In 2024, Northport welcomed the largest-ever container vessel to berth at its facilities. The 21,413 TEU container ship OOCL Japan docked at the Malaysian port on 20 May, surpassing the previous largest ship to call at Northport, the 11,000 TEU Eugen Maersk, in 2013.

Additionally, in August 2024, Northport achieved another milestone, handling 365,558 TEUs, the highest monthly container throughput in its history.
