New freight tracking app goes live in Gothenburg

The largest port in Scandinavia, Port of Gothenburg will launch a new freight tracking application, Port Optimizer Track & Trace by Wabtec, aiming to make it easier for freight owners and rail and terminal operators to track their freight in real-time from quayside to inland destination.

Particularly, the app easily filters information about the freight moving through the port, while, according to a statement, it examines which vessel carried the freight, when it was loaded, and when it left the terminal for the onward journey by rail.

In addition, it issues notifications, not only when everything is going according to plan, but also when a problem occurs in a route that needs to be rectified quickly.

Furthermore, the system is linked to scanning sensors along the rail tracks, using data collected from the Swedish Transport Administration and various rail companies and organisations, to make regular updates on the location of the freight that will ensure secure, traceable transport movements with a clearly stated time of arrival.

Head of Digital Business Transformation at Port Authority of Gothenburg, Joseph Sandwing explained that, at the moment, there are hundreds of different players in the network that need to communicate with each other, resulting in an inordinate number of phone calls and emails, generating stress and uncertainty, and taking up a great deal of time unnecessarily.

“This is something we are aiming to change with the aid of Port Optimizer Track & Trace,” he pointed out.

The digital freight tracking app enables a ground-breaking level of collaboration among supply chain stakeholders, including cargo owners, rail operators, truckers, and terminal operators, which enables maximum port throughput and delivery performance.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Port of Gothenburg’s digitalisation journey, setting new standards for cargo traceability,” said Nalin Jain, President of Digital Electronics at Wabtec Corporation, the company behind the innovative solution of Port Optimizer Track & Trace.

Although initially the service will be limited to freight flows that have been activated, Port Optimizer Track & Trace is expected to expand further in the future.
