New box terminal launches operations at the port of Abidjan

Côte d’Ivoire Terminal officially launched the commercial activities of the new container terminal of the port of Abidjan on 2 November, when CMA CGM Rossini arrived at the new terminal, transporting 5,770 TEUs.

The launch of the activities of the second terminal comes after successful tests in mid-October 2022.

The project was a result of an overall investment of around US$90 million, of which around US$50 million were used for earthworks payable by the Port of Abidjan and around US$40 million for superstructure.

“For two years, we have been working to build this new container terminal in order to provide the Port of Abidjan with an infrastructure that meets international standards and is capable of supporting the growth of traffic while preserving the environment,” said Koen De Backker, managing director of Côte d’Ivoire Terminal.

The new terminal covers an area of 375,000 m² and has a 1,100 m quay with a 16 m draught. The new facility is able to handle 1.5 million TEUs per year.

“Its commissioning will increase trade between Côte d’Ivoire and the sub-region and strengthen the Côte d’Ivoire/Burkina Faso/Mali corridor,” said Bolloré Transport & Logistics, which, along with APM Terminals, operates the new terminal.

This new infrastructure introduces several innovations, including automated gate management and an online appointment system, to facilitate the delivery and collection of containers in a timely and secure manner, according to a statement.

Hien Yacouba Sie, managing director of the Autonomous Port of Abidjan, stated, “We are proud of the completion of this major project, which will contribute to the long-term repositioning of the Port of Abidjan as a key logistics platform on the West African coast.”
