The Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO) has officially been granted NGO Consultative Status with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and has received an invitation to participate regularly in the General Conference sessions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The move marks a significant step in NEMO’s efforts to promote safe and sustainable nuclear energy use in maritime sectors.
With its new consultative status, NEMO is now positioned to play an active role in high-level international policymaking, offering technical expertise and strategic guidance on integrating nuclear technologies into shipping, offshore platforms, and floating power solutions.
NEMO will also participate in the IAEA’s upcoming ATLAS initiative (Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea), which is scheduled to launch later in 2025. As part of the initiative, NEMO will join various implementation groups to help shape regulatory frameworks for nuclear energy at sea.
”This major milestone reflects the growing importance of nuclear innovation in the maritime sphere for achieving global decarbonization and energy security goals”, commented Dr. Mamdouh El-Shanawany, Chairman of NEMO.
