In a landmark achievement for the global container shipping industry, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has surpassed the 7 million TEU capacity mark for the first time, according to the latest data released by Alphaliner.
This remarkable feat reinforces MSC’s position as the world’s largest liner operator, underscoring its dominance in global trade and its relentless pace of expansion.
As of the most recent Alphaliner figures, MSC commands an estimated 21.2% share of the global container shipping market, an unprecedented position in the modern era of liner shipping. The company’s operational strength now rests on a fleet of 955 vessels, comprising 688 owned ships and 267 chartered units, offering an unparalleled network that spans every major trade route on the planet.
The company’s growth trajectory shows no sign of slowing. MSC boasts an orderbook of 124 newbuilds, representing a significant leap forward in both scale and technological sophistication.
These incoming vessels, many of which are designed with alternative-fuel capabilities and energy-efficient technologies, are expected to further consolidate MSC’s leadership while advancing its environmental and operational objectives.
This milestone comes just a few years after MSC overtook long-time rival Maersk to claim the top position in early 2022. Since then, the Geneva-based carrier has continued to expand aggressively through both strategic acquisitions and disciplined fleet investment, effectively reshaping the competitive landscape of container shipping.
