MSC launches new intermodal solution in East Africa

MSC has announced the newly established intermodal route between Djibouti and Ethiopia, which is the first MSC intermodal service in Ethiopia.

The new solution combines road and rail transport to facilitate imports and exports out of landlocked Ethiopia, according to MSC, which offers two weekly services, connecting its global network to the Port of Djibouti in Ethiopia.

  • The PETRA service that connects China, Far East, Southeast Asia and all cargo routed via Singapore to Djibouti
  • The NWC IPAK service, which is a direct connection to North Europe, and a connection to the US, Mediterranean, and IPAK regions via the company’s regional transshipment hub King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia.

MSC said it is seeking to expand its services in Ethiopia and the East Africa region. “We have been enthusiastically exploring our options for the past few years, and are excited to offer this intermodal solution that we believe will add value to MSC service,” commented Soji Thomas Korah, general manager of MSC Ethiopia.
