MSC Launches new direct service linking Bilbao with South America and the Americas

MSC Spain has launched an expanded transatlantic service connecting the Port of Bilbao with key markets in the Caribbean, Central America, and the west coast of South America. The company presented the new service to customers at an event held at the Bilbao Port Authority.

The upgraded NWC–USA–SAWC service made its first call in Bilbao on 19 December with the arrival of MSC Carole. The route offers exporters in northern and inland Spain direct access to major American markets. It cuts transit times, removes intermediate calls, and improves connectivity for Spanish importers and exporters.

The weekly service is the only direct link of its kind on the market. It supports sectors such as raw materials, timber, and food and beverages. It also connects customers to MSC’s wider logistics services, including inland transport and customs solutions.

“MSC’s new route from Bilbao will benefit exporters across northern Spain,” said Ignacio Ballester, Assistant General Manager of MSC Spain. “We continue to strengthen Spain’s links with Latin America and the rest of the world with competitive transit times.”

Ivan Jimenez, President of the Bilbao Port Authority, highlighted MSC as a strategic partner. He pointed to two new routes, including a service to the Pacific coast of South America and another to Halifax, Canada. “These connections strengthen Bilbao’s role as a gateway port,” he said.

MSC’s traffic in Bilbao continues to grow. Exports focus on industrial goods, while imports include agri-food and manufactured products. The new services are also driving higher volumes and opening new opportunities for shippers and logistics operators.

The Port of Bilbao is also investing in intermodality and electrification. These initiatives aim to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and support long-term port decarbonisation.
