MSC container vessel suffers engine room explosion, three crew airlifted from the ship

Three crew members of the 8,000 TEU container ship MSC Rachele have been injured after an explosion in the engine room of the vessel on the morning of 21 June.

The boxship was sailing from Napoli, Italy to the Fos-sur-Mer Port in France, when the explosion caused a fire on board and led MSC Rachele to lose power.

The three injured seafarers were airlifted and have been taken to hospital with two of them evacuated to the Sainte-Anne military hospital in Toulon, France and the third to the Sainte-Musse hospital in the same city.

Panama-flagged MSC Rachele has reportedly been towed to the Marseille-Fos Port and according to the global ship tracking system, MarineTraffic, the ship is currently at the French port.

The fire on board the boxship was reported to be under control by the afternoon of 21 June, while there is no reported threat to the environment at the time of writing. Additionally, the damage to the vessel is still unknown.
