MSC announces Emergency Fuel Surcharge for Europe–Indian Ocean and global trades

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company will introduce an Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) on multiple trade routes starting April 2026. The measure responds to rising fuel costs and ongoing market disruption.

Europe to Indian Ocean Islands and Fiji

MSC will apply the surcharge from April 2, 2026 (BL date) until further notice. The surcharge covers shipments from Europe to Indian Ocean Islands and Fiji. It excludes Reunion, Mayotte, New Caledonia, and Tahiti.

  • Indian Ocean Islands (excluding Reunion, Mayotte):

    • Dry cargo: EUR 240 / USD 275 per TEU

    • Reefer cargo: EUR 285 / USD 330 per TEU

  • Fiji:

    • Dry cargo: EUR 175 / USD 200 per TEU

    • Reefer cargo: EUR 260 / USD 300 per TEU.

Indian Ocean Islands to Global Destinations

MSC will also apply an EFS on cargo from Indian Ocean Islands to global markets. This excludes shipments from Reunion and Mayotte. The surcharge takes effect from April 2, 2026, unless otherwise stated.

Key rates include:

  • To Europe, East Med, Greece, Turkey, Black Sea, North Africa:

    • Dry: USD 140 / EUR 120 per TEU

    • Reefer: USD 165 / EUR 145 per TEU

  • To USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean:

    • Dry: USD 150 per TEU

    • Reefer: USD 265 per TEU

  • To Middle East, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh:

    • Dry: USD 118 per TEU

    • Reefer: USD 177 per TEU

  • To Australia, New Zealand, Pacific islands:

    • Dry: USD 123 per TEU

    • Reefer: USD 185 per TEU

  • Intra-Indian Ocean trade:

    • Dry: USD 47 per TEU

    • Reefer: USD 71 per TEU.

Additional Notes

MSC confirms that all other pricing elements remain unchanged. The company will keep the surcharge under review based on market conditions.
