MSC and Eni sign decarbonization agreement

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and MSC Group President Diego Aponte have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on sustainability and energy transition initiatives.

Eni, an integrated energy company committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and MSC, a global leader in transport and cruise services, aim to expand their successful business relationship to new geographic areas and focus on decarbonizing operations.

The partnership will explore the use of LNG and low-carbon energy carriers such as HVO, bio-LNG biofuels, and lubricants derived from renewable materials for MSC’s logistics and cruise fleets. Renewable energy solutions will also be considered to help decarbonize MSC’s facilities.

The agreement seeks to create synergies across various operations, including logistics services, intermodal transport, and agro-industrial activities for producing biorefining feedstocks. Additionally, it will involve innovative sea, rail, and road transport solutions for HVO biofuel storage and distribution.

“There are many parts of our economic and industrial systems where we must act to reduce emissions. The only way to succeed is by uniting the skills, resources and technologies across a range of stakeholders, for a widespread intervention in each of these key areas. This agreement marks the start of our collaboration with MSC in the decarbonisation of transport and cruise services. MSC is the world leader in the sector and we are confident that together we will be able to develop and implement decarbonisation initiatives, that provide an important contribution to the sector and to the reduction of emissions from our transport systems,” commented Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni.

Other key areas of collaboration include offshore platform decommissioning, joint R&D initiatives, and partnerships within Open-es, a platform launched by Eni to promote sustainability across the value chain. The agreement also emphasizes circular economy practices, such as using renewable and recycled plastics onboard, managing waste generated by fleets, and potentially redeveloping decommissioned Eni sites and assets.

“At MSC we are focused on achieving a successful energy transition and to do this we need the partners we can trust and rely on. Eni has been one of these partners for many years and this MoU is a welcome and natural evolution of our relationship. We look forward to working more closely with Eni as we broaden and deepen our approach to sustainability and decarbonization across the MSC Group of companies,” stated Diego Aponte, MSC Group President.
