MOL, Rio Tinto forge partnership for maritime decarbonisation

On 24 January 2024, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) entered into a partnership agreement with Rio Tinto, a major mining and metals firm and the world’s largest dry bulk shipper.

This agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in safety and crew welfare initiatives and advance the decarbonization of maritime transportation.

Furthermore, MOL and Rio Tinto have agreed to deepen their collaboration on shipping decarbonization, building upon their existing commitment to the DOO program. The DOO program, initiated by Rio Tinto, aims to enhance safety standards and improve crew welfare within the dry bulk industry.

Additionally, MOL Group has set a target of achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. This ambitious goal will be pursued through various strategies, including the adoption of clean fuels for vessels and the implementation of efficient operational practices outlined in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2”.

In partnership with Rio Tinto, the focus will be on enhancing operational and technical efficiencies, as well as exploring potential collaborations in alternative shipping fuels, capitalizing on the expertise of both entities.

MOL and Rio Tinto are committed to continued collaboration in reducing GHG emissions from ocean transportation of resources, all while prioritizing the safety of their operations.
