MITSUI E&S has secured an order for 17 electric Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes for Y3 Berth at the Port of Tokyo. The order comes from Tokyo Port Terminal Corporation, which operates the city’s container terminals.
The cranes will operate at the Outer Central Breakwater Container Terminal. The Y3 terminal is under development and will feature a 16-metre water depth, a 400-metre quay, and a 500-metre yard. It will handle container ships of up to 150,000 DWT, or around 14,000 TEUs.
MITSUI E&S will deliver the cranes by March 2028.
The RTGs run entirely on electricity supplied through a bus-bar system along the container lanes. Unlike diesel-powered cranes, they produce no CO₂ emissions during operations. This supports the port’s decarbonisation goals.
Operators can control the cranes remotely from a console inside the administration building. This improves safety and working conditions.
MITSUI E&S said the new cranes will boost cargo handling capacity, support digitalisation, and accelerate sustainability across the Port of Tokyo. The company will continue to focus on developing environmentally friendly and digitally enabled port equipment.
