Michel Bechtel appointed as new Port Commissioner for Port Houston

Michel Bechtel, the former mayor of Morgan’s Point, has been appointed to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority. He was selected by the Harris County Mayors’ and Councils’ Association to succeed Stephen H. DonCarlos, who recently completed a 12-year term.

Experience in Coastal Protection and Energy

Bechtel is recognized for his expertise in the energy sector and coastal infrastructure. His background includes significant leadership roles across the Gulf Coast:

  • Government Service: Served five terms as the Mayor of Morgan’s Point.

  • Coastal Defense: Currently serves as Vice President of the Gulf Coast Protection District Board of Directors.

  • Maritime Governance: Previously served on the Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Ports of Harris County.

  • Business Leadership: President of Bechtel Exploration and Blue Moon Exploration.

Strategic Vision for the Houston Ship Channel

In his new role, Bechtel will help oversee the strategic direction of the port, which serves as a primary economic driver for the region. His appointment comes at a time of record container growth and ongoing infrastructure expansion along the Houston Ship Channel.

The Port Commission structure consists of members serving two-year unpaid terms, with a strict 12-year service limit. Bechtel’s deep ties to neighboring communities and the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region are expected to facilitate closer collaboration between the port and local industry partners.
