METRANS, the rail logistics subsidiary of HHLA, and INTERPORT Servis s.r.o. have launched a joint project to modernise an intermodal terminal near Košice in eastern Slovakia. The partners aim to create a new logistics ecosystem that strengthens the region at the EU’s eastern border. The upgraded site, named TIP Košice, will serve as a major hub for international transport and a model for integrated and sustainable logistics.
The partnership combines METRANS’ long-standing expertise in European rail logistics with INTERPORT’s regional knowledge. Together, they will turn the site into a multifunctional logistics hub featuring one of Slovakia’s most advanced intermodal terminals. Also, the facility will include digital and automated technologies. In addition, it will include a rare dual-gauge layout that integrates standard and broad-gauge tracks. Two gantry cranes will support the efficient transshipment of goods arriving via broad-gauge rail from Ukraine and transfer them to Europe’s standard-gauge network.
Peter Kiss, CEO of METRANS, said the terminal will create a “future-proof hub that connects East and West, the EU and Ukraine, as well as tradition and innovation.” He said METRANS will continue to offer neutral, flexible and sustainable logistics solutions.
INTERPORT CEO Ľubomír Fronk said the goal is to make Košice a central hub in a new logistics corridor between the EU and Ukraine. He highlighted the terminal’s modern equipment and strategic position.
The project will shorten supply chains, introduce advanced digital tools, create new local jobs, and raise infrastructure and environmental standards. It will also support stronger business links across the region.
The existing METRANS terminal in Košice, part of the network since 2008, covers nearly 50,000 m². The expansion will add new handling and storage areas and two modern rail cranes. The full upgrade is scheduled for completion in 2027.
