Mersin Port to add 1 million TEU capacity by 2022

Mersin International Port Management Inc. (MIP), Turkey’s largest trade gateway, has marked the beginning of the expansion works for EMH II expansion project, which is expected to increase the container handling capacity of the port from 2.6 to 3.6 million TEU.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The project, which represents an investment of US$375 million, will include the installation of an additional mega-vessel berth, the enlargement of the yard and the installation of four new quay cranes and 24 additional yard cranes.

Turkey’s minister of transport and infrastructure, Adil KaraismailoÄŸlu said that with the completion of the project, Mersin Port will have a total dock of 880m in the south and will be in a position to handle two mega container ships of 400m at the same time.

By the end of 2022, when the EMH II project is expected to be completed, PSA International’s Turkish subsidiary MIP is aiming to handle the growing volumes in the region and meet the demand for the port to serve the increasing number of large container ships.

David Yang, regional CEO PSA Europe, Mediterranean and the Americas describes the EMH II project as the “next chapter in Mersin Port’s growth” as he believes that it will give MIP a strategic position to develop port-centric supply chain solutions for beneficial cargo owners and will seal Mersin’s position as a main hub for the East Mediterranean Region.

He also noted that the project is expected to  increase cargo connectivity and visibility through precision-scheduled intermodal connectivity and technology-enabled digital platforms.

Through this investment, MIP will strengthen its position within the Eastern Mediterranean region and contribute towards the economic development of the port and region, as well as create additional employment opportunities, according to a statement.

“The expansion project will secure the industrial potential of the Mersin region in the coming years, ensure higher efficiency and increase the strength and maturity of the logistics industry,” said MIP’s general manager, Johan Van Daele.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the start of the expansion works was held on 19 March.
